Part of old castle wall and grove, Marmaris, Turkey

According to the historian Herodotus, there had been a castle at Marmaris since 3000 BC. Because of the strategic value of the site, many armies tried to invade and conquer it in its history, beginning with Alexander the Great in 334 BC, the crusaders in the 12th and Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century up to the British Army in the early 1800s. Inside the castle wall was a grove sacred to Leto, mythological mother to Apollo and Arthemis. In 1957 an earthquakes almost completely destroyed the city. Only the Marmaris castle and the historic buildings surrounding the fortress were left undamaged.
